Shower door modification

This project involves the shower door in a 1999 29’ American Clipper.

My shower door is hinged on the left.  For those who have tried to use this shower and are of a larger size, I am 6’4”, 230 lbs, you know that the shower cannot be entered with the bathroom door closed. The shower door swings within 9 inches of the bathroom door and stops when it hits the front of the toilet.  I was getting tired of standing out in the hallway to enter the shower.

I solved this problem by moving the left sided shower door hinge point 4 inches to the right.  This allows 4 more inches of the door to swing into the shower area and the space between the bathroom door and the opening shower door is never less than 13” and as an added benefit the shower door swings fully open all the way to the sink.  The opening to enter the shower is still 15”, plenty large enough even for me.

This project can be completed with an electric drill, a Phillips screw driver, and a small wrench or pliers. The shower door hinge points are moveable by loosening one small screw. New holes must be drilled in the top and bottom rails of the shower opening. They both could be drilled in place, but I removed the top rail and drilled the hole at a more comfortable angle. The top rail may be taken off by removing 6 Phillips head screws and gently prying the rail up.

The pictures show the modification and the result.  I can now enter the shower with the bathroom door closed.
