Entry way carpet
Most of us use a throw rug or some such to protect our original carpet in those areas of high use. This certainly includes the entry way steps and the landing area just beyond the steps. I started using rectangular pieces of carpet and screwing them down. This worked fine, but my originals were not washable, and I seldom went to the trouble of unscrewing them for cleaning. So we went to a washable throw rug that matched the color scheme.
I planned to screw it down too, but the dilemma remained of whether we would go to the trouble to unscrew it, and whether the wood flooring would be happy with multiple screw holes. Plus, on the steps, you need quite a few screws to do the job. We found some "curtain rods" that were expandable. They are actually Camping World's refrigerator rods that are for "gating" the contents of each shelf. But they did come in brown as well as white, and they have worked remarkably well, to my surprise. And removal for washing and replacement is extremely easy.
Just another way to do a job we have all struggled with.
